The Baltic Cross was donated by the Baltic National Committee in 1919. The National Committee was the political representation of the German population in the area of Courland and Livonia. The Baltenkreuz was a military award for all soldiers, from officers down, who fought in this area for at least 3 months in 1919. The purpose of this unit was to defend German territory against advancing Russian forces after World War I. The enlisted Baltic army was obliged to evacuate under the Treaty of Versailles. After refusing to comply, the Baltic troops were defeated in November 1919. This award was recognized as a state award in the 3rd Reich and later also in the Federal Republic and could be worn. A total of around 22,000 crosses were awarded.
