Background info:
In May 1940, following the German invasion, the Belgium press agency's activities were suspended. But quickly, the Propaganda-Abteilung (PA) granted a commercial monopoly to three Belgian press agencies: Graphopress (directed by Beecken), Sado and Sipho. Sipho became the largest company in Brussels producing news images and supplying the press with iconographic material.
Atlantik agency bought Sipho in 1943. Staff members and photographers, who must be affiliated with the Illustrated Press Association, are chosen by the PA. We find J. Crommelynk, D. Alexis, J. Van Bruyssel, J. Vriens, E. Cluytens, L. Leblois, and L. Vergauwen. Sipho also uses freelance photographers based abroad.
From 1940 to 1944, the agency produced photographs according to current events or PA orders, distributed images to the press, distributed photographic products subject to quotas from the Agfa firm, managed and enriched its photographic collection and provided a news snapshot subscription service.
In 1946, the Brussels Court of War found the company management and most of the photographers who had worked for Sipho guilty of collaboration and confiscated the agency's equipment and archives. These are first entrusted to the General Archives of the Belgium Kingdom before being transferred to CegeSoma.
