The division was set up during the mobilization on August 26, 1939 as part of the 2nd wave in Altenburg in military district IV.

In 1939 it was relocated to the Eifel for border security.

western campaign
As part of the western campaign, they advanced through southern Belgium to the Somme and were involved in the second phase of the battle for Paris, where they then remained temporarily as an occupying force. In October 1940, about a third of the division was given to form the 319th Infantry Division.

In the spring of 1941, the division was transferred to East Prussia and assigned to the 9th Army for the attack on the Soviet Union.

Operation Barbarossa
Through the Suwałki and Wilna stations, she was involved in the Battle of Białystok. A little later she was deployed north of Smolensk. In August 1941, major combat operations broke out between IR 187 and the 32nd Cossack Division in the Pripet swamps west of Bobruysk.1 In the winter of 1941, the division marched as part of Operation Typhoon via Vyazma - Gschatsk - Moschaisk - Rusa and Zvenigorod to just before Moscow before it had to retreat back to the Gschatsk area.

1942
The year 1942 was determined for the division by the costly defensive battles in the front arc of Rzhev. In the spring of 1943 she left the Rzhev front arc in the company Buffalo Movement via Sytschowka, Dorogobusch in the Welisch area.

1943
On April 1, 1943, the GR 173 had to be disbanded due to heavy losses, and it was only re-established in April of the following year. In October 1943, the 3rd Panzer Army retreated to the Panther position in the Vitebsk area.

1944
In early 1944, the division was assigned to the 16th Army on the southern wing of Army Group North. As a result of the Soviet summer offensive in 1944, the division then had to retreat to Kurland via Dorpat, where the entire army group was surrounded.

Kurland
This was followed by participation in the six Kurland battles until the capitulation in May 1945.
