Background info:
On August 10th and 11th 1935, the IVth Marine Artillery Department Cuxhaven celebrates its 40th anniversary, which is supposed to be a reunion for everyone who belonged to this department before, during and after the 1st world war 1914-1918. .

By cabinet order dated October 31, 1857, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia ordered the formation of a "naval artillery company". This was assigned to the already existing naval battalion and received Danzig as a garrison. In 1877 the name "sailor artillery" was introduced and at the same time the sailor artillery departments in the naval ports of Kiel and Wilhelmshaven were subordinated to the local sailor divisions. It was not until 1883 that the artillery was again separated from the sailors' division and placed under an inspection of the naval artillery. In 1893, the 2nd company of the III Sailors' Artillery Division was transferred from Lehe to Cuxhaven, where it formed the IV Sailors' Artillery Division with two companies. Fort Kugelbake and the mortar battery were garrisoned with these companies. In 1897 a third company was added for the newly built Fort Grimmerhörn. In 1904 the Inspectorate of Coastal Artillery and Mining was formed and the four existing sailor artillery departments were subordinated to it: I.Matr.-Art.-Abt. in Friedrichsort, II.Matr.-Art.-Abt. in Wilhelmshaven, III.Matr.-Art.-Abt. in Lehe and IV.Matr.-Art.-Abt. in Cuxhaven. The seat of this inspection is Cuxhaven. Later came the V.Matr.-Art.-Abt. in Heligoland to do so. In 1905 an independent mine company was formed in Cuxhaven and at the same time a main division for the sailor artillery department in Kiautschou to two companies. In 1910 the existing four companies of the IV.Matr.-Art.-Abt. a fifth company was added, which had to provide the mine and barrage service in the Elbe estuary and later also off the North Frisian Islands. The other four companies were distributed: Kp.1 gun battery, Kp.2 Fort Thomsen, Kp.3 Fort Kugelbake, Kp.4 Grimmerhörn.
