The story about the phrase is the Battle of Stavoren, described in 1345, in which the West Frisians killed the Dutch count Willem IV. the motto of the victorious Frisians was Phriso pro Libertate mortem appetit, which is: Liever doot dan onvrij (literally: "The Frisian accepts death for freedom, that is to say: Better dead than unfree."
