The award was instituted on November 19, 1844 by King Willem II and has since been awarded on his birthday, December 6. Because a glass of jenever was traditionally consumed during these ceremonies in the officers' quarters, it is also referred to as the Jenever Cross.
Maker marked Van Wielik from Den Haag. The company Van Wielik was the Dutch court and government supplier of medals, awards and the associated decorations. The company was founded on November 14, 1841 by Johannes Martinus Josephus van Wielik. The company has stopped since June 2018.
