Background information:
The award was 2 versions for 40 and 24 years they were awarded by King Ludwig II on March 3, 1865. The reason for this was the creation of a service award that could also be given to officers. The veteran shields donated in 1816 for non-commissioned officers and soldiers were replaced by these crosses. The award could now also be given to generals, staff and senior officers and military officials. The service award had to be returned in the event of upgrading or death. From 1872, the award was extended to civil officers of the military administration and the gendarmerie. The awarding of the gendarmerie ceased after the establishment of the security service award in 1906. In 1876 the seniority mark was renamed the Service Award Cross 1st and 2nd Class. The 2nd class was only awarded to officers, medical officers and senior civil servants. In 1907, the award options were expanded again. Now lower clerks in the military administration and, upon request, non-regular masters of the technical institutes could also be honoured. The length of service in the Imperial Protection Forces in German East Africa was counted twice. Periods of service completed in the Greek army were not taken into account. The 1st class was a silver cross with enamelled center shields. The 2nd class was a bronze cross without enamel. Under Prince Regent Leopold in 1906, the 2nd class became smaller (41 mm x 43.5 mm) and made in light bronze. The suspension of the band ring changed from 2 balls lying on top of each other to a ball with a wide, flat eyelet.
Dark bronze cross. The cross arms with raised smooth edges. The insides are cross hatched. The curved arms of the cross are bevelled at the ends and slightly curved inwards. A small ball in the middle of each arch. Front and back with a large, round, embossed central shield. On the ball of the upper arm of the cross there is a second elongated ball through which the band ring goes.
