Albert Leo Schlageter was sentenced to death by a French military court, he was executed despite protests within Germany and abroad. During the Weimar Republic and the time of National Socialism, he was considered a martyr. Düsseldorf was called 'Schlageter-Stadt'. He was a German Freikorps member and a resistance fighter against the Belgian and French occupation of the Ruhr area.
