The General Badge of Honor was donated by King Albert in 1876 to reward and recognize praiseworthy actions and meritorious achievements. This order replaced the previously awarded silver medals of the Order of Merit and the Order of Albrecht. Holders of these awards could exchange them for the new cross. With an addendum to the deed of foundation on January 18, 1901, it was determined that swords should be awarded for distinctions in war. The swords were placed under the ring for those who had previously held the peace award. On October 18, 1907, it was enacted that the General Badge of Honor should be given the designation of the Cross of Honor.
An open crown could be added to increase the award. The cross of honor and the cross of honor with crown could each be awarded with swords for services in the war. These crossed through the middle. Swords under the ring were no longer awarded.
