The award has been made out to Unteroffizier der Bespannungs-Abteilung Nr. 18 Hermann Rietz.
This was a division who was responsible of the Artillery train. This was a train of wagons (horse driven) later mechanized with all goods needs to setup the artillery.

The Großherzoglich-Hessische Train-Abteilung Nr. 18. On October 1, 1901, the number was changed to No. 18. The bespannugs-abteilungen that were gradually established and intended for the foot artillery and technical troops were shifted back and forth between the battalions several times.
