Heritage from Otto von Diederichs Admiral Imperial Navy
Personal legacy from Ernst Otto von Diederichs (1843-1918) was an admiral in the German Imperial Navy. Before that he served in the Prussian Navy and the navy of the North German Confediration.
During the Franco-Prussian war 1870-71 he commanded the coastal gunboat SMS Natter. In 1878 he was executive officer of the corvette SMS Luise in east-asia. He was also a gunnery and torpedo instructor at the Marineakademie in Kiel. He became in 1890 director of the Imperial Shipyard in Kiel. And in 1892 he became rear-admiral. He travelled to the United States in 1893 and visited several shipyards and the naval war college at Newport. In 1895 he was appointed Chief of staff for Admiral Eduard von Knorr at the German Imperial Naval High Command. In 1897 he replaced Tirpitz as commanding officer of the East Asian Cruiser Division. He had to defend the newly acquired lease from china on the Jiaozhou bay untill there was a base established and governor in place. In 1898 he was promoted to vice admiral. after 1899 he became chief of the admirality staff and in 1902 he became full admiral.and in the same year he requested his retirement because of different views with Admiral Tirpitz and his reorganizations. He died March 8 1918
