Argentine sword bayonet M1909 2nd pattern (matching numbers!)
A very nice 2nd pattern Argentine sword bayonet M1909 with scabbard.
The scabbard and ricasso are marked with matching numbers G6123. On the Ricasso is stamped Modelo Argentino 1909 and the crest of Argentine. Otherside of the ricasso it is maker marked Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co. Solingen. On the spine a Star-A proofmark. On the Pommel RA inside an oval. RA stands for Republic Argentine. Scabbard is also marked with RA in an oval on the ball. Also on the throath of the Scabbard it is marked with an asterisk inside a D and a circle with an inner cross. On the mouth it is marked with an E and circle with inner cross.
To allow interchange of bayonets between the M1891 and M1909 rifles, the bayonet design was revised to incorporate the higher M1891 muzzle ring on the remaining bayonet production (all but the first 3,000) and the Ricchieri Adapter was developed for installation on M1909 rifles and carbines.
Reversion to the high M1891 muzzle ring also eliminated the need for a T-O slot and clean-out hole, which resulted in shortening of the hilt by 10 mm. The use of this bayonet was on the 7.65 mm. M1891 and M1909 Argentine Mauser rifles.
